TURN TO STONE.
Thursday, December 31st, 2009
Ryan began his inner lower left sleeve.

You see this famous bust used everywhere today, but few know it’s roots. The narrative of the Medusa that is a few thousands of years old gave influence to the sleeves’ overall concept that embodies each of the qualities of the seven deadly sins. Her origins from ancient Greece, and her neutral influence in Christian ideology sets the tone for the future pieces to add to Ryan’s collection.

Many old masters have done their interpretations of Medusa, some favorites like Carravagio, and Ruben but no one comes close to Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Bernini is the last of the old renaissance masters that the Catholic Church utilized to silence early Protestant Reformation. When the religious power was questioned, the Cardinals hired the most skilled of men like Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and Raphael to overwhelm culture and regain control over the people’s attention. Bernini was the last to answer their call.
They wanted to achieve silence…….I think they did.

GET A GRIP.
Wednesday, December 30th, 2009
We are wrapping up a few projects at the studio before we head out to Belgium and the coming New Year. You might remember Jarrod’s geisha we started a short time back, now on the second sitting.

We are good for now, but Jarrod’s collection as a whole has many more sessions to come. Keep a look out for later stages.

And Andrew came through to finish off his upper right sleeve….also his very first tattoo.

Inspired by the values Drew lives by, the classic handshake symbolizes a mix of strength, family and respect…

A fun piece, and one of the more interesting concepts. I remember folks use to say, you can immediately tell the type of individual one is by a man’s handshake.
Stay posted more projects underway.

Chris drove through from SF to begin his lower left sleeve.

He wanted to pay tribute to his trade as a Barber. As simple as most people want to see it, cutting hair is a form of art. You can always tell the best barbers are the ones who take every cut as a passion, not a hustle. Chris just made it official.

BUILD IT, AND HE WILL COME.
Thursday, December 24th, 2009
After the last minute Christmas shopping, I stopped by Lucius Hudson to buy myself some presents……………if you know– you know.

It’s nice to see and be aware of the attention and craft that goes into a simple surface like a panel or canvas. The building of it is an art in itself….

I might get killed for this….some top secret masterpieces in construction for one of my favorite illustrators, James Jean.

Might just be me, but doesn’t feel like Christmas. There’s something deeper at work…..nonetheless, Happy Holidays.

Observe the signs.

PRECIOUS.

Terra dropped in to take a small step to rework her lower right hip.

If you are a Veteran in getting tattoos, there’s almost always that one. You know that one mistake you made when you were a kid when you thought getting tattoos made you “cool”. Or the one where you thought she, or he really loved you but the relationship failed….Or how about that one, where you had a little too much to drink, and so did your artist that you met fifteen minutes ago when you decided to get a tattoo………..fifteen minutes ago. Well Terra has been through it all.

She wanted to begin the evolution from her current state by starting off with a more direct approach. As small, and simple as the image of a rose might appear, they still stand as one of the classic tattoo images that determine patience, understanding of basic visual tools, skin, and precision. The quality in which you treat the smallest of things directly reflects the quality and how the biggest tasks are treated. Keep your eyes out for Terra’s transformation.
