Lalo Marquez has been one of my strongest mentors since the gate, and recently I had the chance to recap what really matters–the time that we have now. There’s always been issues of time with the crazy amount of work and energy that myself and my team puts into the art and work we do, but when I got to see the kids of the Boys and Girls Club of Venice, CA, I saw these little kids, still young, not giving a fuck, not caring about bills or debts or how this country is starting to decay from the inside out, all they cared about was creating and living through their art. Lalo and about on average 4000 kids come flowing in the club, and of course only a handful really get pushed into college. I had to stop and pay my dues to my mentor Lalo-the art director and Michele -the teacher of this multicultural house, two people that care about the hope for our America. As a student, as an artist, as a designer, and as a blessed individual lucky enough to see this, I think it’s crucial for all other artists, and mass people to take a close look at these kids. These kids accomplished these pieces with no money, no materials, slacks taken off rooftops and whatever else they could gather to make this gallery happen. They came from Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City, South Central, Watts, Compton, East LA, West LA-all over. Take a look, turn off your MTV, log off your MYSPACE, your FACEBOOK, put down the blunts, the corporate documents, the polluting People Magazine and fucking stop the mind decay….observe how a group of youngsters come together and use their minds and energy into creating, learning and growing.Free your mind.
